Haruhiko Okabe Profile
Free Improvisor Japanese born in 1961
He plays the Tenor Saxophone and Hichiriki (A Japanese traditional instrument simular to oboe, used in Gagaku; Japanese court music).
His style has been based on Jazz and Free Jazz. He studied Jazz when he was a student of Okayama University Japan, majoring philosophy, in its Jazz club.
In 1997 he started to perform as a professional musician at Ogikubo Goodman in Tokyo (a live house specialized in Free Jazz).
In 1998 he made a short journey to Bali Indonesia, and studied some Balinese music ,
suling; bamboo flute tingklik; bamboo zylophone.
After return to Japan he found Gagaku Hichiriki, and studied it in Japanese shrine from an old Shinto priest.
In 1999 he participated in Creative Music Festival in Shimane Japan and met Carl Bergstroem-Nielsen.
In 2000 he had a duo concert with Joelle Leandre in Okayama Japan.
In 2001 he went to northern Australia to study music of Aborigine's Dejeridoo.
In 2005 he had a duo concert with Carl Bergstroem-Nielsen "Intuitiv Music from Denmark" and organized "Hichiriki and Kyboad Harmonika Improvisation Meeting in Takamatsu" in Takamatsu Japan.
His music is a kind of a cross criticism of these musical experiences and a transfiguration of the subject through reflections of these resonances.
He lives in Takamatsu Kagawa Japan.
